A room that contains only hard surfaces will act as an echo chamber, basically diminishing the performance of your equipment. The flow of sound is integral to any movie watching experience. If the sound coming from your front speakers is not absorbed by acoustic panels, it will bounce off the walls and arrive at you at slightly different times.
